A lot of SEO professionals treat every link building campaign of their clients as one-size-fits-all, as if one strategy would work for every type of website. But in reality, you must consider the context, nature, and target market of each business model to align with the right intent for a linkable audience.

Consider, let’s say, in B2B link building, where a big chunk of link building efforts must be spent on positioning your brand as a go-to source of knowledge, and that building long-term authority is what separates a highly successful b2b link building campaign from a mediocre one.

In B2B link building, most of your link building work isn’t predicated on your products, as in the case with eCommerce brands, but more so, in developing content assets that really drive expertise and showcase what the brand should be known for based on its credibility and unique value proposition.

1. Strategic Thought Leadership (The CEO Method)

In the B2B sector, professional credibility starts with a person or team rather than the brand itself. By actually positioning your executives or in-house experts as industry thought leaders, you’ll gain a cumulative advantage in getting high-quality backlinks that are inaccessible to standard marketing teams.

Most B2B companies just attempt to build backlinks through their generic brand accounts. But given the nature of journalists and editors who actually prefer to cite more individuals than brand accounts ─ especially if those personalities have verified professional history.

Start by identifying “executive-level” angles. Avoid common topics that won’t get interest from A-tier publications. Executives, as you know, speak on high-level subjects, examples would be:

  • Future market predictions and economic shifts
  • Operational challenges running the company during industry transitions
  • Ethical frameworks for new technologies (i.e., AI implementations).

Of course, there are other topics, and that will depend on your leaders’ expertise. Another note to make is getting buy-in from your executives, as many are quite busy co-creating content for your link building campaigns.

The best alternative is to send emails directly to their executive assistants, noting that it’s an opportunity to build their thought leadership and increase brand awareness for their B2B company.

Alongside it, you should secure requests for quotes and tips from platforms like Connectively or Featured – where you’ll find journalists who are actually looking for expert quotes.

You can provide a concise quote that offers real value – either a counterintuitive thought or a fresh opinion about the given topic. When a journalist quotes an executive, they typically link to the executive’s LinkedIn profile or to the company’s About Us page or the executive’s individual page.

Monitor potential links to the LinkedIn page so you can email the editor or publisher to request a link to your website (which would bring more link equity to your brand).

2. Badge Link Building

This link building strategy has been abused by many SEO professionals in the past, as they see it just as a tool to acquire links from networks of professional blogs and publications.

I believe legitimate industry awards are still a powerful link building, when done right ─ it works when the awards represent real value and rigorous selection criteria ─ prioritizing editorial integrity.

badge b2b link buildingCreate a public page on your website that explains how you choose winners. You can use clear metrics such as annual revenue growth, customer satisfaction scores, or innovation in product development ─ it all depends on your preferred criteria.

The next move is to design the badge that will be displayed on their homepage or About Us section ─ serving as solid proof of credibility, especially if you’ve built enough authority in your space that people will recognize your awards.

Year-dated badges also help encourage companies to update their links annually, maintaining strong link freshness.

Give winners clean embed codes they can add to their landing page immediately. Better to use descriptive, non-spammy alt-text for the image (e.g., “Winner of the Company Name 2026 X Award”).

You can release a press release as a multiplier for content dsitribution tagging winning companies on social media ─ which will give you many winners to also write their own blog posts or news updates about the award ─ this actually creates a “second wave” of natural, contextual links in addition to the badge link.

3. Student Resource Center

One of the effective ways to build thought leadership for your B2B website is by creating a dedicated student resource center ─ a section of your site that provides free educational tools, data, or even software access to the academic community (think of SaaS link building services).

Unlike the typical and traditional link building strategy of scholarships, which are financial, the strategy here focuses much on utility and knowledge sharing.

Your resources from this core area of your website must provide genuine pedagogical value in order for you to earn backlinks from university department pages or career centers.

Let’s say your company sells a SaaS product or technical tool; you can offer a student edition of the product. Create a free version of that software for anyone with a dedicated .edu email address. Then, reach out to professors who teach those relevant courses. Suggest your tool for their lab work or assignments. From here, you’ll receive university links to your Education page as a required component of the curriculum. This is a creative way to further increase brand awareness among students who are also potential users.

Another B2B link building tactic is giving out proprietary data for researchers. As many lack access to real-world B2B data, you can provide an open data repository of clean, anonymized internal datasets for students. Simply categorize the data by industry or use cases (e.g., Logistics Efficiency Data 2024 to 2026).

As a result of this link building campaign, you can earn links from graduate students and faculty, actually linking to your data in their published papers and university library resource guides.

You can also create free certification courses that teach a specific skill in your industry. A good way to start here is to host a series of video modules and a final exam on your website – Teachable, for example, is a good platform to help you out. Upon completion, your students will receive digital certificates.

Position your professional certification programs as a way for students to improve their resumes ─ university career centers often link to this type of program as a Recommended Professional Development resource.

Once you have published your resource center, you can launch your .edu outreach campaign, emailing a more specific faculty member teaching your subjects or topics you have built a resource for, instead of tapping info@university.edu address. A recommendation from a professor to the university webmaster is a much more effective way to secure an .edu link.

4. Event to Asset Equity Pipeline

Event link building isn’t just meant to increase brand awareness; they’re also a great tool for generating more backlinks for your website.

When you combine your link building efforts with resources and support from PR, brand marketing, and general marketing teams, you transform your event from a simple video stream into a powerful engine for high authority backlinks

Here’s how three powerful teams collaborate to amplify link acquisition for your B2B brand.

Your PR team can draft a press release about the event ─ a keynote speech or industry findings, reach out to journalists to offer private interviews with the speaker and from here, gain links from high-authority publications.

Your brand team can create more original insights graphics or market predictions specifically for the event ─ these assets are watermarked and hosted on the event landing page. And as many industry bloggers would want to use these graphics to simply summarize your event, they can just provide a source link back to your site.

Your general marketing will handle the distribution part ─ handling all the top-of-funnel traffic and partner relationships. They may coordinate with your software or service partners for co-promotion opportunities. Provide these partners with unique partner registration link to host on their blogs. From here, you get both direct business links and secondary links from the amplification efforts of your general marketing team.

5. Programmatic Utility and Tool-Based Acquisition

Tools have become a low-barrier entry point for companies to start amplifying their reach and get more traction for their products or services. In the B2B authority link building lane, acquiring tools can help build authority for your main brand and get more passive links you wouldn’t gain simply by launching yours.

Given that those launch tools have their own websites and have amassed links in the past, you would benefit a lot when you acquire and direct link equity to your main company website.

Start buy finding tools that are utility rich, which are often owned by independent developers who lack marketing budgets. Tools like niche calculators, technical converters or any assessment forms – make sure they have their websites.

Use Ahrefs to see how many referring domains have they acquired over the years. If they have 300+ referring domains or more, assuming they are all quality links, you could consider purchasing the tool and its entire domain.

Purchase the tool and host it on yourcompany.com/tools, for example ─ set up 301 redirects for every high-authority page of the old website to their corresponding new URL on your domain. Then, see how those link juices will flow to your B2B website.

Building a Competitive B2B SEO Moat

If you’re looking to build a highly successful B2B link building campaign, it’s time you shift from volume-based link building tactics to a more high-level authority acquisition strategy.

Using link building strategies mentioned above, you can build a more genuine utility and professional credibility, alongside your link building efforts ─ giving you a sustainable advantage your competitors cannot easily replicate.
